Life360 Tile Starter Pack with a Tile Mate and a Tile Slim

How Do Bluetooth Trackers Work? Which Phones Can Use Them

October 7, 2026 by Tech Treasures Editorial

How do Bluetooth trackers work? Up close, your phone hears the tag’s short-range Bluetooth signal and can make it ring. Farther away, other people’s phones on the same finding network pick up that signal and report where they heard it. That’s how Bluetooth trackers work without GPS, Tile trackers included. It’s also why the network behind a tag decides which phones can use it.

Product Network Phones Sharing with family Battery
KIUP Tracker Tags for Android and iPhone Apple Find My or Google Find Hub iPhone, or Android 9 and above (not Huawei) Yes, with friends and family Up to 2 years, not replaceable
UGREEN FineTrack Tracker Tags (4-Pack) Apple Find My only iPhone and iPad, with a Mac for viewing only Yes, on iOS 17 or later Up to 2 years, replaceable CR2032
Life360 Tile Starter Pack (Mate + Slim) Tile, through the Tile or Life360 app iPhone on iOS 16 and above, or Android 9 and above, officially on Pixel, Samsung Galaxy and OnePlus (not Huawei or Honor) Yes, on a shared Life360 map 3 years, sealed in

Check the Phones column against every phone in your home, because a tag only works with the phones its network supports. A Huawei phone rules out all three, since KIUP and Tile both leave Huawei out and UGREEN needs an iPhone. Tile also skips Honor phones and Android tablets.

Two setup rules catch people out. KIUP doesn’t say one tag can sit on both networks at once, so set each tag up on the phone that will look for it. And a UGREEN tag (UGREEN calls it the FineTrack Smart Finder) stays linked to one phone until that phone unlinks it.

How Bluetooth trackers work up close

Close by, your own phone does the finding. A Tile connects to the Tile app over Bluetooth, so once it’s in range, you can ring it from the app. KIUP’s and UGREEN’s tags do the same through the finding app already on your phone. There’s nothing extra to install.

The range figures land close together. Tile rates the Mate and Slim at up to 350 feet, and KIUP lists 100 meters, about 330 feet.

Then you follow the sound. The Mate rings at 100 dB, the Slim at 104 dB and a KIUP tag at 105 dB. UGREEN’s buzzer reaches 80 dB, 20 to 25 dB below the other three, which makes it the quietest by a wide margin.

How Bluetooth trackers work far away

Out of range, the tag keeps broadcasting, and strangers’ phones do the listening. When a passing iPhone hears a Find My tag, it reports where it was. That exchange is end-to-end encrypted, so Apple can’t see the location of the tag or of the phone that found it. Google’s Find Hub network encrypts its reports end to end too.

Which phones do the listening depends on the network:

  • Apple Find My. Apple calls it “a crowdsourced network of over a billion Apple devices.” You see your tags only in Find My on an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch.
  • Google Find Hub. Phones on Android 8.0 or lower can’t join the wider network. By default, it waits for several nearby Android phones to detect a tag before showing you where it is. Each Android owner can change that. Pick “With network everywhere” and Google says the network can help in “both busy areas and remote areas.” Tracker tags don’t work at all on “Without network.”
  • Tile. Beyond Bluetooth range, Tile trackers work through the Tile Network once you turn on Notify When Found, and the network alerts you once another member’s phone comes near your Tile. That alert can lag.

Lose things in quiet places? Check your own phone’s Find Hub setting.

How long the battery lasts

The Mate and Slim last 3 years. Their battery is sealed inside, so when it runs down, you replace the whole tracker. KIUP’s tags last up to 2 years, and their battery can’t be serviced either. UGREEN’s tags also last up to 2 years. But they take a CR2032 coin cell you swap yourself, and the Find My app shows the battery level.

UGREEN says the FineTrack is UL4200A certified, which matters in a home with small children. The CPSC made ANSI/UL 4200A-2023 the mandatory standard for products with button or coin batteries. Under it, a compartment for a replaceable coin battery has to take a tool or two separate, simultaneous hand movements to open.

What you can put a tracker on

The Mate is built for keys and backpacks, while the Slim, Tile’s thinnest tracker, goes in wallets, passport holders and luggage. UGREEN’s tags are for keys, wallets and luggage, and KIUP’s are for wallets, luggage and backpacks.

For a bag that gets caught in the rain, both Tiles are rated IP68. KIUP’s tags are IP65, which covers rain and splashes. UGREEN doesn’t give the FineTrack a water rating.

Alerts when someone else’s tracker is with you

Bluetooth trackers can work against you if someone hides one in your bag, so the phone makers built in warnings. Apple and Google added shared alerts in iOS 17.5 and Android 6.0 and later, so your phone shows “[Item] Found Moving With You” if an unknown tag travels with you. In that announcement, Chipolo, eufy, Jio, Motorola and Pebblebee committed to making future tags compatible.

Tile wasn’t on that list. Its own answer is Scan and Secure, which looks for Tiles and Tile-enabled devices traveling with you, but not other brands’ trackers. Anyone with the Tile app can run it, even without a Tile account. Still, Tile’s Anti-Theft Mode can hide an owner’s Tiles from that scan once the owner passes an ID check and a selfie scan.

Which tracker set to buy

All three Bluetooth trackers work with iPhones. Only two work with Android.

Get the KIUP Tracker Tags for Android and iPhone if your home mixes iPhones and Android phones, since it’s the only set here that works on both networks. Skip them if you’d rather change the battery yourself.

Choose the UGREEN FineTrack Tracker Tags (4-Pack) if everyone at home uses an iPhone. Find My alerts you when a tag moves out of range, with its last known location, and Lost Mode shares your contact details with whoever finds it. Skip them if anyone needs to find things from an Android phone.

Go for the Life360 Tile Starter Pack (Mate + Slim) for keys and a wallet, on either kind of phone. Double-press a Tile’s button and your phone rings “even in silent mode,” Tile says, as long as it’s in Bluetooth range and the button is set to ring your phone. Skip it if you want a battery you can replace.

Bluetooth tracker questions

How do Tile trackers work without Bluetooth?

Tile trackers can’t work without Bluetooth, because Bluetooth is the only way a Tile reaches a phone. With no phone connected, the Tile app shows where the Tile was “the last time it made a successful connection” with your phone. So that pin marks a last sighting.

How do Bluetooth GPS trackers work?

Bluetooth trackers like these three work without needing GPS. Instead, a nearby phone reports where it heard the tag, and the map shows that report rather than a live position. KIUP’s tags are “Not for GPS,” and Tile says its Bluetooth trackers work without “GPS or real-time location monitoring.”

Do Bluetooth trackers need a subscription?

UGREEN’s Bluetooth trackers don’t need a subscription, since they use Find My “without any subscription fees,” UGREEN says. Tile works on Life360’s free plan, which keeps 2 days of Tile location history, while the Silver plan keeps 7 days and Gold and Platinum keep 30. KIUP doesn’t mention a subscription for its tags.
